Knitting and shapes

Beanster has been going to a knitting club with a group of other home educated children and she has been loving it. She enjoys chatting to the others as she knits, mostly about Minecraft, but with a bit of help she has managed to create this fabulous jumper for her Isobel doll as she natters. She brought it home for Isobel on Wednesday and she looks very smart in it.

Moo has done her own creating. She has enjoyed making pictures from shapes. She loves the set we have where you have to nail the wooden pieces in place using a hammer. She made the ship we visited recently at the Riverside Museum in Glasgow.

She also got the mosaic box out and tried to follow the picture instructions to make the snail. We then worked together to make flowers with our pinboard sets. Lovely and colourful. Spring is finally here in our house, hooray.

Harry Potter and STEM club

One of the great things about Home Ed is the freedom to sit in your pyjamas, eating your breakfast, as you have your favourite books read to you and on Monday that is just what we did. Moo chose a book about Amelia Earhart written for children and Beanster wanted more of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets read. She is currently loving acting out her favourite bits of the book which usually feature herself as Hermione Granger. We love looking at the pictures in the illustrated hardbacks. Beanster has been particularly excited about getting to the one below and learning all about the diary of Tom Riddle.

After some more of the novel Beanster did some of her own reading practise using the Teach your Monster to Read app whilst Moo had her Amelia Earhart book. Later there were some mysterious Hogwarts riddles and potion recipes made…

before we headed out to STEM club (dressed up in witch costume in Beanster’s case!). Today we were learning about acids and alkalis, testing the ph of different types of water and how to record our results.

After club the girls like to go into the garden with their friends to play and to explore. They let their imaginations go wild as they invent intricate games, learn to share, to take turns and resolve arguments. Moo set up her own little house whilst Beanster played witches and wizards with the boys.

Afterwards Beanster was very excited to get home and show Mama her latest findings in Minecraft. I am clueless on all things Minecraft so it all goes over my head!

Theme parks, playgrounds and yet more snow!

Well, we thought the snow was gone, but alas we were wrong. This weekend it returned again!

20180318_082959

We mostly kept warm indoors and it didn’t matter because this had arrived through our door on Friday.

20180316_173329

The morning had been spent with the girls building a theme park from Duplo so when the playground engineering set arrived we decided to continue the fun.

The playground kit is trickier than it looks and needed Moo, Beanster and I to all work together following the instructions to make some of the models.

20180316_200151

Today (Sunday) we decided it was time to give the carpets a deep clean (wash).

As Mama and I did this the girls got musical.

We finished our weekend with a nice roast dinner and got all the furniture back in place. Even the fairyland windowsill got a wee tidy up.

Our week in summary

We have had a lot of fun over the last week with lots of learning opportunities. Here are the highlights.

Ceramic painting in South Queensferry. The girls painted a plate, coaster, caterpillar and fairy. The plate and coaster were a gift for Mama.

Chalk and charcoal drawing. We have drawn with chalk before but this was our first time trying charcoal. Think it is fair to say it was not a hit with either girl.

20180308_091104

Some construction activities. Duplo is always a hit and this week the girls made a fairground. We have ordered a STEM playground challenge kit so we are looking forward to that arriving and having fun with it. We played with more Duplo at friend H’s house. Beanster made a bathroom and Moo a train and livingroom with a dungeon!

Science is always a big hit. At HE club the girls showed their friends how to do paper chromatography and we did experiments to try and float grapes. We discovered we could float grapes if we saturated the water with salt. Of course other things were later added to make a potion!

We also looked at surface tension this week. We worked out how to float a standing bug made from card then how to make it float for longer. Adding goose fat under the feet made them waterproof so our bug stayed afloat for longer. We also did an experiment using milk, washing up liquid and food colouring. The food colouring made a thin surface covering on top of the water which we then broke the surface tension of by using washing up liquid on a cotton bud.

Beanster had her latest HE artbook arrive which she needed to put an entry in before sending it off to the next child. This week’s theme was Space so we got busy with paint, glitter, pencils and stickers. We think next week Beanster will get her own artbook back full of pictures made by the other children in her group. Exciting. Moo got involved too and made her own wee space picture. Later we went outside and carried on the fun outdoors.

This morning Moo set our calendar. The weather dial seems to be forever set at either cloudy or snow. Oh how we want it to go to sunny…..

We have played, written thank you letters, bounced on trampolines, been swimming and fed the ducks (peas and bird food), amongst other things .

Yeah, I suspect January is going to be just as busy as December. 😁

Swimming and toys for grandma & grandad

Beanster’s ballet class is held at the local leisure centre where there is a pool and a soft play. Moo only noticed the soft play for the first time about half way through this week’s class and got very upset when I said we didn’t have time to go in this week. She was distracted by going tp look at the pool and declared “I want to bring mummy here. With you and Beanster” so today we did that.

Moo is a very enthusiastic swimmer and likes going backwards and forwards between the 2 of us and jumping in. Beanster managed to show mummy her fabulous swimming on her back after a few false starts. It was nice to all go together as we haven’t managed to do that for ages. I think we’re going to have a fabulous time at Center Parcs in a couple of weeks.

After swimming we had some obligatory chips then went to the shops to pick up some things in preparation for Beanster’s party next weekend and Moo had a much needed nap in the car.

Grandma & Grandad have been looking for some new toys for the girls and cousin H to play with at their house as they’ve outgrown a lot of things. We spotted some things on the local 2nd hand group so went to pick those up on the way home.

Once we were home the girls road tested the new toys which I think Moo thinks are for grandma & grandad! After tea Beanster did a bit more Mathseeds so Moo wanted to play on the tablet but lost interest fairly quickly.

It’s felt very autumnal today. I think we’ll need to dig out the long sleeved t-shirts and work out who needs bigger/more warmer clothes soon.

Just so festival

I have not gotten round to blogging about the Just So festival until now. Many apologies. The festival is set up on private grass and woodland grounds near Sandbach with camping and glamping. The site is split up into different sections, all magical in their own way. There are performances and activities in every section throughout each day, until late at night, so much fun was to be had.

Our highlights were the pillow fight, jelly bean architecture, bare foot walk, lantern making and parade, watching movies outside late at night, theatre for one (a one to one theatre show in the woods) and tales of animalia (more woodland theatre). You choose a tribe to belong to and throughout the weekend you can earn gold pebbles for your tribe by taking part in different activities. We were the foxes and our tribe collected the most pebbles out of all 7 tribes so we won the coveted festival trophy.

Some of our home ed friends were there too and the girls enjoyed waking up and seeing them when they poked their heads out the tent.

Here are some photos summarising the fun that we had.
