Swimming and toys for grandma & grandad

Beanster’s ballet class is held at the local leisure centre where there is a pool and a soft play. Moo only noticed the soft play for the first time about half way through this week’s class and got very upset when I said we didn’t have time to go in this week. She was distracted by going tp look at the pool and declared “I want to bring mummy here. With you and Beanster” so today we did that.

Moo is a very enthusiastic swimmer and likes going backwards and forwards between the 2 of us and jumping in. Beanster managed to show mummy her fabulous swimming on her back after a few false starts. It was nice to all go together as we haven’t managed to do that for ages. I think we’re going to have a fabulous time at Center Parcs in a couple of weeks.

After swimming we had some obligatory chips then went to the shops to pick up some things in preparation for Beanster’s party next weekend and Moo had a much needed nap in the car.

Grandma & Grandad have been looking for some new toys for the girls and cousin H to play with at their house as they’ve outgrown a lot of things. We spotted some things on the local 2nd hand group so went to pick those up on the way home.

Once we were home the girls road tested the new toys which I think Moo thinks are for grandma & grandad! After tea Beanster did a bit more Mathseeds so Moo wanted to play on the tablet but lost interest fairly quickly.

It’s felt very autumnal today. I think we’ll need to dig out the long sleeved t-shirts and work out who needs bigger/more warmer clothes soon.

Just so festival

I have not gotten round to blogging about the Just So festival until now. Many apologies. The festival is set up on private grass and woodland grounds near Sandbach with camping and glamping. The site is split up into different sections, all magical in their own way. There are performances and activities in every section throughout each day, until late at night, so much fun was to be had.

Our highlights were the pillow fight, jelly bean architecture, bare foot walk, lantern making and parade, watching movies outside late at night, theatre for one (a one to one theatre show in the woods) and tales of animalia (more woodland theatre). You choose a tribe to belong to and throughout the weekend you can earn gold pebbles for your tribe by taking part in different activities. We were the foxes and our tribe collected the most pebbles out of all 7 tribes so we won the coveted festival trophy.

Some of our home ed friends were there too and the girls enjoyed waking up and seeing them when they poked their heads out the tent.

Here are some photos summarising the fun that we had.

Day 2 St Andrews

Beanster had me up at 6.50 this morning and before anyone else awoke she did some colouring…

20170804_081111
…and we played a game of farmer lotto….

20170804_081745
….and she played with her story cubes.

When Moo awoke she helped to make her own breakfast.

20170804_092508
Beanster let Lyall do her hair then she settled down for her breakfast.

20170804_093220
Before we headed out for the day we used some charcoal that last night’s fire had made to do some drawings.

20170804_095831
We were off to St Andrews for a walk along the beach and a trip to the butterfly house in the Botanic Garden.

We did the obligatory selfie before our stroll.

20170804_115634
Then we paddled in the water.

We drew in the sand, looked at dead crabs and investigated the flowering plants that were growing in the sand.

We even found some interesting caterpillars.

20170804_131221
Beanster managed to convince Lyall to give her a lift back to the car so we could head off to our next destination.

The Botanic gardens at St Andrews is free the first Friday of the month which by happy coincidence was today. You pay a small fee to go into the special summer exhibition, the butterfly house but it was worth it to see the huge variety of butterflies flying around.

We didn’t spend too long in the rest of the garden as  the heavens opened and the rain was torrential, but it will definitely be a place to come back to soon. We decided to hang out in the education house and glasshouses until the rain slowed down and we could head back to the tent.

Before leaving St Andrews though we just had to have some ice cream in the rain (typical Scottish summer delight).

20170804_161615
Back at the tent, Mama did a good job of entertaining the girls whilst I braved the rain and  cooked our tea outside. We then needed to eat our tea inside the tent. A slightly damp and soggy affair.

20170804_193026
After tea Moo played with the travel connect 4, building a castle with the bits and Mama taught Beanster how to play Uno.

20170804_200903
I then played shops with the girls. They used everything inside the tent which they sold at their pillow counters and imaginary till.

20170804_212053
Beanster then built a model of our home town before we headed to bed.

Today the rain taught the girls how to be resilient, adaptable and creative. I think they did well. Don’t you?

Rock climbing and mud!

Our girls are at their happiest when outdoors and today’s outdoors featured rocks and mud…..lots of rocks and lots of squelchy mud.

Both girls were quite ratty this morning so I decided to share their bad moods with Granny and Grandpa (aren’t I lovely) before going to meet friends at Townhill Woods. We headed out after breakfast and the girls had a play, a chat and Beanster watched a film with Grandpa. After some yummy lunch……

20170731_123016
…..we headed out to Fife.

It took us a while to find our friends in the woods but once we did the girls took no time changing from their shoes into wellies and Beanster had some fun at the swampy pond.

20170731_144400
Moo found a big muddy patch and would quite happily have stayed in it all day.

Her sister had gone off with her friends and when we eventually caught up with them this is where she was found. (spot the pink dot)

20170731_151956
She spent most of the rest of the time up and down this rocky hill, gathering rocks in  her boots and having a wonderful time.

Our friend Eilidh caught her expression brilliantly in this photo when we tipped the rocks out of her boots. Beanster thought it was hilarious.

And this was the state of her feet.

And where was Moo all this time?….She was eating her weight in wild raspberries which she had found on our travels.

Before we headed off Beanster and her friend P investigated another hill and went cricket hunting.

And Moo found another muddy puddle.

20170731_160018

At home we had good old Scottish mince and tatties for tea then played some lotto games before the grubby ones had a bath to get rid of the day’s grime.

Life is fun (and dirty) when you are Beanster and Moo!

Mummy and Moo day

Beanster was away out with Granny on Friday to Camera Obscura in Edinburgh so Moo and I headed for our own day out to Edinburgh Zoo. It must be one of the most vertical zoos in the world but Moo climbed almost to the top. Our girls have always been full of energy and not ones for the buggy.

A trip into the Monkey houses first.  Moo loved the Drill.

There was lots of climbing and walking along walls.

Back to the 80s

Today, learning more History.

We headed out to Summerlee Industrial Museum with some home ed friends.

20170720_114620
This Museum is absolutely wonderful. It is full of old industrial equipment, machinery and other artefacts from days gone by. There are houses set up as they would be from different decades, an old tram to ride on and a mine you can take a tour down. We specifically went to see the ‘back to the 80s’ exhibition which was set up by our friend Mark Nixon. Not surprisingly the exhibition was great and took me right back to my childhood. Beanster enjoyed dressing up with her friends in 80s clothing and as TV characters.

This old dentist chair Beanster found fascinating.

20170720_133242
In the 1840s house one of the museum staff spoke to the kids about what life was like. They used some kitchen equipment and learned how people used to wash. Nobody liked the smell of the soap!

We all loved the tram, especially wee F, who was with us.

20170720_134401
Beanster had brought her Barbie doll along wearing a 1980s wedding dress which once belonged to my Sindy doll.

20170720_145452
The kids played for well over an hour in the gardens behind the houses. An intricate game of foxes was developed between Beanster, P, A and A and other museum visitors were astounded at the level of imagination they were demonstrating. It was just a typical level of imagination from our weans. Moo and F enjoyed watching the trams, climbing around the water fountain and having cuddles.

Later on Moo had fun watching out the tram window and kept her eye on the driver.

20170720_150719
20170720_150748
Then she finished off our trip driving a train.

20170720_152154
I had promised Beanster we would meet up with her other friend H at the allotment so after Summerlee that is where we went. We met Mama there who took a sleeping Moo home whilst Beanster played pretend camping and made potions with H and I did a bit of work. Veggies are starting to grow. Beanster and H practised their negotiating skills…..loudly!

Rockpooling and sand investigation

As the weather was lovely yesterday we decided to take a trip out to North Berwick beach. We had lots of fun looking in rockpools, building castles and cakes from sand, digging up little bits of ‘natural treasure’ which we looked at closely, identifying sea creatures and paddling in the water. Some of the creatures we found today were crabs(live and dead), blue jellyfish, sea anemone, whelks, limpets, razor class, barnacles, a sand worm of some description and teeny tiny fish.

First of all, before we left, fuzzy felt pictures were made and talked about.

Another lovely day in the lives of Beanster and Moo.
